The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created by the United States which was aimed at protecting Western countries from the invasion of Soviet Union. In 1949 Canada joined, then Great Britain and then other Western European nations. If anyone was attacked it would be taken as an attack on all.
12 nations sign the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington,
D.C. on April 4, 1949.
