Why did they want to have a buffer of countries between it and Western Europe?

Western Countries were suspicious of communism and the Soviet Union was suspicious of their previous allies so they wanted to create a buffer, because they thought that Western Countries would want to invade the Soviet territory through Europe, particularly through East Germany.
